This is a very important summation, together with a numerical analysis of winery application trends, of the Commission's and of Planning Director Morrison's commitment to have a complete discussion of the impacts that winery tourism is beginning to have on the future of the county. This meeting may be quite important if the numbers presented are discussed or is may be brief if the Board just schedules another hearing specifically for the task. |
Wed, Aug 20, 2014 9:00am | Planning Commission Hearing: Raymond WineryThe planning commission will once again take up the request for substantial increases in Raymond Winery's marketing plan. This project, like the Yountville Hill Winery, is a cause célèbre in the ongoing transfer from an agricultural into a tourism economy in Napa County. More célèbre than most because it is truly a battle of the titans of the wine world with mega-grapegrower and preservationist Andy Beckstoffer against mega-vintner and bon-vivant Jean-Charles Boisset. This is just the kind of large increases in tourism that the WDO discussion at the Board level is beginning to look at. The agenda is here |

Wed, Oct 29, 2014 9:00am | Napa Pipe at the Planning Commission6 years in the planning process to date, the largest single development in Napa history, Napa Pipe gets another hearing to hash out an agreement between the county and the city of Napa on the division of the spoils (or more probably the deficits). This project is one more piece (along with the even larger Watson Ranch development in American Canyon a couple of miles south) in the build-out of the Napa-Vallejo metropolitan area. Opposition by the City of Napa and input by county residents, whose feeling of living apart from the urban sprawl of the Bay Area will will soon vanish, and whose commute south will move from annoying congestion to absolute gridlock, seems to have had little effect in changing the county's questionable promotion of the project. |

It will be a sad day for those of us wishing to postpone the urbanization of the county. The new traffic will require major road improvements which in turn will generate more traffic and development.
