The Caves: Protest Hearing

The protest is being made to oppose the issuance of an ABC license to applicants located at 2275 Soda Canyon (the location of The Caves at Soda Canyon).

Hearing Date and Times: Thursday March 27th, 2014 at 9:30am and also 11:00am

Hearing location: Napa County Administration Building, 1195 Third Street, Basement Level, Auditor’s Conference Room, Napa CA 94559 map

The applicants seek to obtain a winegrowers license, while our neighbors seek to prevent the issuance of the license on the grounds that granting the license will result in a significant increase in the traffic volume on Soda Canyon Road, an increase in the threat of fire, and a meaningful decrease in the quality of life not only for our neighbors who live nearby The Caves, and all neighbors that use the roadway, but also our neighbors down the road who have to deal with the noise and safety issues of a busy road way on a daily basis.

Planning Commission to discuss Cumulative Impacts

Comissioner Heather Phillips has posed a series of questions to the Planning Department to try to give metrics to the cumulative impacts of recent and future winery approvals. Her letter to the planning director is here.

The result of this and other discussions the County has on their current direction of supporting tourism wineries will have a major impact on the number of tourism wineries that eventually find their way onto Soda Canyon Road. Pleas attend this meeting to voice your concerns or write a letter.

BOS Meeting regarding the WDO

Staff Report to the BOS concerning a timetable and workplan and presentation of data to begin looking at the cumulative impacts of the current implementation of the WDO. Leading to a community forum in November and finally a committee recommendation some time next year. It is item 10A of the agenda which is here.

The background staff document is here. This is a very important summation, together with a numerical analysis of winery application trends, of the Commission's and of Planning Director Morrison's commitment to have a complete discussion of the impacts that winery tourism is beginning to have on the future of the county.

This meeting may be quite important if the numbers presented are discussed or is may be brief if the Board just schedules another hearing specifically for the task.

Planning Commission Hearing: Raymond Winery

The planning commission will once again take up the request for substantial increases in Raymond Winery's marketing plan. This project, like the Yountville Hill Winery, is a cause célèbre in the ongoing transfer from an agricultural into a tourism economy in Napa County. More célèbre than most because it is truly a battle of the titans of the wine world with mega-grapegrower and preservationist Andy Beckstoffer against mega-vintner and bon-vivant Jean-Charles Boisset.

This is just the kind of large increases in tourism that the WDO discussion at the Board level is beginning to look at.

Napa Pipe at the Planning Commission

6 years in the planning process to date, the largest single development in Napa history, Napa Pipe gets another hearing to hash out an agreement between the county and the city of Napa on the division of the spoils (or more probably the deficits). This project is one more piece (along with the even larger Watson Ranch development in American Canyon a couple of miles south) in the build-out of the Napa-Vallejo metropolitan area. Opposition by the City of Napa and input by county residents, whose feeling of living apart from the urban sprawl of the Bay Area will will soon vanish, and whose commute south will move from annoying congestion to absolute gridlock, seems to have had little effect in changing the county's questionable promotion of the project.

BOS Hearing On Yountville Hill Winery

continued from Dec 2nd BOS Agenda (breaking developments here)

The appeal of the Planning Commission's tragically farcical Jul 2nd approval of the Yountville Hill Winery will be heard by the Board of Supervisors. This is the next opportunity to speak out in opposition to this poster child for the transfer of an agricultural to a tourist economy, and the havoc that transition will cause to the rural and natural charms of the county.

The Yountville Hill Neighbors website

The Supervisors will also be finalizing their commitent to the Napa Pipe Project entitling the developer to build the project. It will be a sad day for those of us wishing to postpone the urbanization of the county. The new traffic will require major road improvements which in turn will generate more traffic and development. The new voters will be uninterested in the concept of the ag preserve.
